Top 5 Maroon 5 Singles From 'V' Ranked From Worst to Best

Maroon 5 performing in 2014.
Following, following, following the "Map" that leads to the BEST V single

We're counting down the top five best singles promoted from Maroon 5's platinum-selling fifth studio album, V from the worst to the best. The V era began with the very Police-y hit single "Maps", which was one of the hottest songs of the summer last year and peaked at number 6 on the Hot 100 chart and "Animals" saw Maroon 5's first real controversial troubles with it's racy music video. "It Was Always You" saw promotional success worldwide and "Sugar" became the band's most popular single of the last decade with a world record breaking music video and a killer live performance on The Voice. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" is the latest single cut from the slice of pie that is V and is most likely the final piece.

So, before we get started, we're ranking the top 5 best V singles from worst to best based on commercial success and fan favorite. So let's get ranking.

5. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherf**cker", the fourth single from V

Not that it's the "worst" single from V, it's just not as good as the top four. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" is the freshest cut from V being released less than a week ago on Friday (at 3pm EST on iHeartRadio), and upon it's release there were some mixed reviews. Some hardcore fans were ecstatic for the single's spicy and refreshed lyrics and some others were not too thrilled about it's dance-poppy radio-friendly sound and lyrical content. And the fact that it's the newest single and has only garnered 3 million views on YouTube is some reason why it is only number 5 on the countdown. Written by frontman Adam Levine and it's parent producer Shellback, the song's lyrics are about being in love with a ditzy, California blonde who is all about the glitz and glamour rather than focusing on the more important things in life, such as love. Commercially, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" entered at number 67 this week on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 35 on the Mainstream Pop Songs chart. Several radio stations claim it'll be Maroon 5's hottest summer hit to date, however, it'll take some time for the arena rock-inspired tune to top those like "Moves Like Jagger", featuring Christina Aguilera, "One More Night", or "Love Somebody."

4. "Animals", the second single from V

Now occasionally, the second single from Maroon 5's recent albums become the most popular, right? In this case, more than likely. But that doesn't mean that the most popular is what the fans are screamin' about at shows. But "Animals" is a definitely new step into the pop realm for Maroon 5, as it has worldbeat drums, echoing vocals from Levine, and spine-chilling guitar riffs that make the song an ear worm of a pop rock hit. Written by Levine, co-written by Shellback and Benny Blanco, and produced by Shellback, the single is defined as "dance-pop" to some and "arena rock" to others. The single was a commercial success, for the most part, charting at number 3 and selling over 1 million digital units in the U.S., better than it's predecessor "Maps" and not as good as it's successor "Sugar", but it still took over pop radio stations across the board. And it's controversial music video definitely helped with it's overall success and view count on YouTube and Vevo. The RAINN (Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network) said about the video: "No one should ever confuse the criminal act of stalking with romance. The trivialization of these serious crimes, like stalking, should have no place in the entertainment industry." Yikes. To date, the song's video nears 160 million views on YouTube.

3. "Maps", the first single from V

Yes. The song that kicked the V era off with a bang. The lead single "Maps" sees Maroon 5 venturing into a rockier pop rock sound with folk-like production similar to The Police's earlier ska-pop stuff and is a breath of fresh air compared to the other over-processed tracks on V. "Maps" is somewhat an echo to that of Maroon 5's lead single, "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa, from their previous studio album Overexposed in which it has spunky snares from Matt Flynn and crystal clear, easy to sing along to vocals from Levine. The song's breezy guitar riffs make for a great tune as well. The composition of "Maps" began in late 2013 with producers Benny Blanco, Ryan Tedder, and Noel Zancanella and was written by Levine along with it's production team. As for commercial success, upon it's release it was the talk of the web as it topped the Billboard Twitter Real-Time Trending 40 chart and later peaked at number 6 on the Hot 100, number 2 on the Pop Songs chart, and topped the Adult Top 40 and Contemporary Songs charts.

2. "It Was Always You", promotional single from V

For those who were yearning for a new sound from Maroon 5, they got it with this promotional hit from V. "It Was Always You", written by Adam Levine and Sam Martin and produced by The Monsters and the Strangerz, incorporated a whole new level of electronic pop. This song takes the band's new poppy direction and makes it dark, with yearning vocals and deep twists and turns in the melody, with Levine exploring the lower side of his register... which is still relatively high. Even though it was never intended for pop radio release, it still performed moderately well on the charts, peaking at number 45 on the Hot 100, number 19 on the Canadian Hot 100, and at number 2 on the Digital Songs chart.

1. "Sugar", the third single from V

As we conclude out countdown of the top five best singles taken from Maroon 5's latest album, V, we would like to rightfully place "Sugar", the album's third cut, at number 1. A disco, funky pop rock, and soul song written by Levine, Joshua Coleman, Lukasz Gottwald, Jacob Kasher Hindlin, Mike Posner, and Henry Walter, no other song on V delivers a sweeter pop-infectious hit than "Sugar." The single The production elements consist of a simplistic electric guitars in the background and an unpretentious electronic pop synthesizer complementing the song’s chorus. The band, renewed in their sound, brings a quality reminiscent of their earlier work. Interestingly enough, this record would fit in on the album, Songs About Jane, somewhat. It's music video is reminiscent to that of the movie The Wedding Crashers where the band crash real life wedding up and down Los Angeles and perform the hit. And to date, it is Maroon 5's most viewed music video of all time with over 350,000,000 million views and is in the top 30 most viewed music videos of all time. Now, despite "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" being released recently, commercially "Sugar" is still going strong on pop radio peaking at number 1 on the Pop Songs and Dance/Mix Club Songs chart and being the highest-charting single from V on the Hot 100, charting at number 2.

These Lyrics to 'This Summer's Gonna Hurt' Are Broken Down and Redefined

Maroon 5 in 2014.
"This Summer's Gonna Hurt" is broken down for you

Last week, Maroon 5 released their new single from the renewed edition of their fifth album V, which was reissued this week, titled "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" (..."This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherf**cker" on the album version), and it's easily the catchiest hit of the year, thus far, and is sure to take over pop radio station across the planet this summer. But it was obvious that upon it's release fans were not a fan in particularly of the new single's lyrical content at all, singling out the song for bashing women and ditzy California girls and some even went as far as to call it anti-feministic.

So, with the help of genius.com, I'm breaking down "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" and it's lyrics to further help reason why the song is really not all that horrible and is actually a genius summer song.

Now before we get started, the song was not written by the members of Maroon 5 directly, however was written by frontman Adam Levine and the song's core producer Shellback. With that said, let's start from the beginning.

"This summer's gonna hurt like a motherfu**er": This opening line to the song's chorus is just simply stating that Levine is predicting future heartache. He predicts that him and his lover will not be a couple by summer's end due to the fact that their personalities waver and are a fault in their relationship: He's down-to-earth and she just cares about fame, fortune, and glamour. As said on genius.com, "The summer heat will eventually kill their relationship, leaving Adam with all the painful after-effects."

And saying that something is going to hurt like a "motherf***ker" generally means it's going to really hurt.

"Her body's hot, her body's like the summer. I'm in a trance...": Adam is comparing his lover's personality, looks, and beauty to that of a California summer.

"Her mind is not, no, as sharp as all her diamonds": Although she is beautiful and sexy, Adam is using diamonds, one of the sharpest minerals, as a metaphor to explain how she's not the brightest bulb in the bunch. She is your typical, ditzy California blonde. But he loves her unconditionally.

"I see her dancing in the streets, sippin' champagne on the beach, so expensive when she eats, 'cuz she's so fancy": Adam is describing that his lover is all about the high-priced meals, drinking alcohol on the beach, and having a lot of youthful fun; calling her a "fancy" woman. Although he enjoys her company and beauty, he realizes that she's using him to get these luxurious things and it's taking a toll on him.

"I check my phone when I am weak, she never posts anything deep...": Levine is stating that she is too materialistic to post anything with substance (or anything that shows that she loves him) on her social media. As said best on genius.com, "She’s more likely to tweet about the purse she just bought than anything that would prove she had a brain."

"She wants it all, she's always takin' something, and now I'm left with nothing": She begs Adam for money and takes advantage of his wealth to go buy a hot new purse or a fancy dress. She eventually leaves him alone with little-to-no money at all and without much for himself.

"I'm rippin' off that bandage, because I just can't stand it": Levine is finally succumbing to breaking up with her because of her foolish ways. Ripping a bandage off hurts like hell temporarily, but the pain eventually subsides. Adam uses the action as a metaphor to describe how it’s much better to deal with the pain at once than to draw it out for months.

"I see her dancing on a fool, like she's 17 and cool, but it's just nasty": Adam sees that she's a flirtatious person and may dance and socialize with other men at the club, and that bothers him, which leads to him passive-aggressively calling her "nasty." He refers to her asa 17 year old because of her attitude, personality, and immaturity, despite her beauty.

"She has to have it all, chases every star, she's so popular": Adam is haunting himself with the thought of her being so popular, likable among other men, and her not appreciating what's important over what's hot in the fashion industry or what happened on the latest episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta, or whatever.

Adam Levine, 'Voice' Coaches Perform B.B. King Tribute on 'The Voice'

The Voice coaches in 2015.
Adam, Blake, Christina, and Pharrell take The Voice stage to remember B.B. King

Last night (Tues, May 19), the eighth season of NBC's hit television show The Voice came to an exciting conclusion with multiple performances from superstars such as Kelly Clarkson, Ed Sheeran, and Luke Bryan and performances from the season's top 20 contestants and not to mention the unveiling of the winner, mister Sawyer Fredericks from Team Pharrell.

However, one of the more heart-tugging moments from last night's season finale was the ode coaches Adam Levine, Blake Shelton, Christina Aguilera, and Pharrell Williams gave to the late B.B. King. The coaches performed his 1969 hit single "The Thrill Is Gone", from King's album Completely Well. This follows-up the coaches Adam, Pharrell, Blake, and Gwen Stefani's finale coach performance of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas", from season 7. You can watch that here.

River's Review: 'This Summer's Gonna Hurt' Is Pop Pureness

"This summer's gonna hurt like motherfucker / fucker", Adam Levine belts out during the new Maroon 5 song's chorus.

Maroon 5 began teasing their new song "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker" earlier this week and with high expectations for the single, following it's release earlier today (Friday, May 15), it surprisingly did not sit well with most of Maroon 5's most loyal and hardcore fans. In fact, a poll on iHeartRadio displays that the song has 62% dislikes over likes and it's lyric video on YouTube is nearing 1,000 dislikes. If you are starting to feel a little déjà vu from the new song and it's overwhelmingly negative responses, you may be feeling what you felt back in 2011 when Maroon 5 surprised fans and music lovers alike with their disco-inflicted pop hit "Moves Like Jagger." "Jagger" was not received well whatsoever within the first few months of it's debut on contemporary radio and surely didn't garner digital download sales or requests off the bat, but the Shellback produced track later collected over 900,000 download units on the iTunes Store, jumping from 4-1 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the United Kingdom's best-selling singles of all time. "Jagger" officially crossed Maroon 5 over from their sweet-and-shy pop rock and alternative rock bubble to a completely different world of music and broadened their horizons.

"This Summer's Gonna Hurt" is a easily one of the catchiest tracks Maroon 5 has ever put out as a single. It's predecessor "Sugar", which was hands down the catchiest song on Maroon 5's latest studio effort, V, doesn't come remotely close to how pop-perfected "This Summer" is. But "Sugar" kept an empowering sound that incorporated all instruments from the band members including percussion, guitar, bass, and piano, which is something fans missed this time around.

The title alone, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker", struck fans as complicated and quite ill-mannered. Upon your first listen of the song, the first time you hear Levine belt out the cuss word "fucker" in the opening chorus, you're actually drawn in with it's rather heavy emphasis. The clean/radio edit to the song doesn't stray far from the words "motherfucker" and "fucker", replacing the words with an "Ah-ha" sound (or possibly just "fucker" reversed?). My point is either you are immediately attached to the song's catchy and empowering chorus or you are left disgusted and somewhat uncomfortable. For me, personally, I was drawn in and thought it was quite the crossover from their previous single's sweet and polite premise to this single's harshly-put lyric choice.

Sonically, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" is a funk song with influences from 1980's post-disco and pop. You can hear the muted guitar licks throughout the song (most prominent in the second verse and so forth) that are reminiscent to something Chic used to do back in the day. Overall, the song is a synth-pop extravaganza that's infectious and will become the ear worm in the your head all summer long. Vocally, Adam Levine slays. A beautiful falsetto, that man has.

Whether you like it or not, we have another monster hit on our hands and will be on the radio quite often throughout the next few months.

Maroon 5 is set to perform "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" on NBC's hit show The Voice on it's season 8 finale on Tuesday, May 19th and I am excited to see how the song will be debuted live for the first time. This isn't the first time Maroon 5 debuted a song live on The Voice; back in 2012 the band premiered "Payphone" with it's guest vocalist Wiz Khalifa on stage and also the same a year prior with "Moves Like Jagger" with fellow-coach Christina Aguilera.

5 Things You Need to Know About 'This Summer's Gonna Hurt"

Here's everything we know about Maroon 5's new single, and possible V reissue

From the release date to Maroon 5's possible future re-release of V, we are covering everything you need to know so far about the band's highly anticipated new single, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt."

1. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" will have an explicit AND clean edit.

Official single cover for "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker."
Upon the the first few announcement's of the new Maroon 5 single, the song's title was referred to simply as "This Summer's Gonna Hurt", which still stands true. However, following the publishing of Maroon 5's official announcement of the single yesterday (Monday, May 11) on their Facebook page, they referred to the single as... "This Summer's Gonna Hurt Like a Motherfucker." This clearly means that their will be a clean/radio edit for those Mothers out there with children under the age of 10 that enjoy Maroon 5's music and there will be the explicit version for those hardcore fans as well.

2. Maroon 5 will perform "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" live on primetime T.V.

Maroon 5 announced yesterday that they aren't just simply releasing the single to digital retailers and to radio airplay, but they are also debuting the song live on national television on Tuesday, May 19th on NBC's hit reality music competition show The Voice. It will mark the second time this season that Maroon 5 would perform on the show live following their performance of "Sugar" a few weeks back. You can watch their performance of "Sugar" below.

3. There may be a possible V reissue pack coming.

Winning fan art cover for 'V' contest in 2014.
Upon the announcement of Maroon 5's single "This Summer's Gonna Hurt", many speculated that the band were releasing a reissue of their fifth studio effort, V, which was initially released last September (and topped the U.S. Billboard 200 Album chart, making it their second No. 1 album since 2007). Maroon 5 is very well-known for releasing reissues of their albums. The band re-released their second album, It Won't Be Soon Before Long: Deluxe Edition, a year following it's initial release, in 2008 with the addition of the remix for "If I Never See Your Face Again", featuring pop songstress Rihanna. In 2010, the band released their (underwhelming-ly promoted) third studio effort Hands All Over, and released a re-issue of that less than a year later in the summer of 2011 to promote their smash hit single "Moves Like Jagger", featuring Christina Aguilera. The same happened with their debut album, Songs About Jane as well, after it was released in 2002 and didn't pick up enough sales, the band released "This Love" in 2003 and sales for Songs About Jane rocketed and was repackaged with bonus tracks and demos. SAJ was also reissued in 2012 as a 10th anniversary edition with several demos and remixes added. So, with that being said, it wouldn't be a surprise to fans that V would be re-released with the addition of "This Summer's Gonna Hurt." Also, it is speculated that 6 new songs excluding "This Summer..." will be added into the V reissue.

4. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" will have a music video.

News of the music video for "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" went up online before fans even knew about the single. In late April, P.J. Morton (Maroon 5's keyboardist) among others posted photos on social-media photo-sharing app Instagram of the band shooting a music video in a desert setting in southern California. Fans were quick to assume that the MV was for "Leaving California", a cut from Maroon 5's new album V. Rumors of that were shut down, however, immediately after the announcement of "This Summer's Gonna Hurt."

5. "This Summer..." may be released early Friday morning.

If you're a hardcore Maroon 5 fan that's active on Twitter and Instagram then you that the release date for "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" has been pushed back and forward (and back again) multiple times. iHeartMedia and Interscope confirmed that the single will be released at 3am EST on the morning of Friday, May 15th.

New Maroon 5 Song Titles Surface, Anticipate New 'V' Reissue

Maroon 5 in the studio with Mailbox.
Will these new Maroon 5 songs be on the 'V' reissue?

Earlier today (Saturday, May 9), fans of pop rock outfit Maroon 5 pointed out a few things on the Internet. There are not one, not two, but 6 (yes, you read that right) brand new song titles that have appeared on Maroon 5's repertoire.

Earlier this week, it was announced that Maroon 5 were to release a brand new single "This Summer's Gonna Hurt", set for a release on May 19th on NBC's show The Voice and will most likely serve as the lead single from the band's forthcoming reissue of their fifth album V (which was originally released last September).

So actually, we have 7 new song titles.

The new song titles that appear on the list of work titles on the official Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI) website also include the songwriter and producer credits. Check them out below.

List of new Maroon 5 songs and credits:

"Forgive Me" (BMI Work #17554690) written by Levine, Tedder, Zancanella

"Heat Of the Moment" (BMI Work #8777369) written by Levine

"Keep Keeping Me Waiting" (BMI Work #8778670) written by Levine, Carmichael

"Let It Go" (BMI Work #8777901) written by Levine, J. Evigan

"She Smiles So Sad" (BMI Work #10500924) written by McFadden, Levine, S. Martin, M. Martin, Levy

"These Days" (BMI Work #8778350) written by Levine, Carmichael

"This Summer's Gonna Hurt" (BMI Work N/A) written by Levine

So, can we expect all these new seemingly new songs on the V re-issue pack? Or maybe a brand new album? We'll have to wait and see. It is possible that "Forgive Me" is just a thrown away demo-version of "New Love" and that "These Days" is just a remastered version of the Kara's Flowers song from 1999.

Maroon 5 played "Sugar", and Adam talks about arguing while on tour

Last night (Wed, May 6), Maroon 5 performed on the outdoor stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live and frontman Adam Levine sat down and talked with Jimmy Kimmel about touring with his band, arguing about Jurassic Park stuff with his bandmates, being married to Behati Prinsloo, and him hitting someone in the face with a microphone during a Maroon 5 concert.

You can watch all the interview clips and Maroon 5's performance below.

Yesterday, news broke out that Maroon 5 were to release a brand new single, titled "This Summer's Gonna Hurt", with a May 17th release. It was confirmed by the iHeartMedia, Billboard magazine, and multiple radio stations via online that the single will impact pop radio on May 26th. A music video was filmed for the single and is set to premiere sometime in June. "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" will most likely be the lead single from a reissue of Maroon 5's fifth studio album, V, which dropped last September (and topped the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, earning the pop band their 2nd No. 1 album), and spawned 3 top 10 singles: "Sugar", "Animals", and it's lead single "Maps."

Maroon 5 to Release New Single, 'This Summer's Gonna Hurt'

Maroon 5 to premiere a brand new single titled "This Summer's Gonna Hurt"

Being added onto the hot list of songs to takeover this summer, Maroon 5 is joining Britney Spears, Iggy Azalea, and Adam Lambert for having the hottest song of the summer.

It was announced earlier today (Wednesday, May 6) by radio man and Billboard magazine editor Sean Ross (@RossOnRadio) that Maroon 5 will be premiering a brand new single entitled "This Summer's Gonna Hurt", which is set to hit radio airplay on Sunday, May 17th and will impact digital retailers on Tuesday, May 26th. A music video for the single was filmed on location in a desert setting last month and is set to premiere sometime this June.

Even though it has not been confirmed by the band or their parent label of Interscope Records, "This Summer's Gonna Hurt" is rumored to be the lead single off of Maroon 5's upcoming re-issue of their fifth studio album V, which dropped last September and topped the Billboard 200. Thus far, V has spawned three top 10 hit singles: "Sugar", "Animals", and it's lead single "Maps."

As of lately, Maroon 5 has not revealed any plans of filming or dropping a new music video for any songs off of V. Last week, keyboardist PJ Morton posted a photo on Instagram of the V album cover sheet in a desert setting making fans speculate whether it was a behind-the-scenes look at a music video to come. More specifically, "Leaving California." However, nothing has been confirmed.
