James Valentine Speaks Up About Ryan Tedder, Meaning Behind 'Maps'

Maroon 5 in 2011.
The Maroon 5 guitarist spoke up about his friendship with the Ryan Tedder and the story behind "Maps"

Maroon 5's lead guitarist, James Valentine, spoke with ABC News earlier this week to talk about the band's highly anticipated new album, V, which is set to be released on September 2, and spoke up about the band's latest top-ten hit single "Maps."

Speaking about Ryan Tedder and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine's relationship together, Valentine says "Ryan and Adam have a great chemistry together as writers and actually, personality-wise, they kind of remind me of each other," James tells ABC News Radio. "They're both sort of all over the place, in a good way, which can be good creatively, as long as you can wrangle it."  He laughs, "So, they've wrangled it a couple of times and got some great songs out of it."

As for what "Maps" is about, James says not having written it, he can't say for sure, but he believes it's about something Maroon 5 has explored in many other songs: toxic relationships.

"For me, the map [in the song] originally lead to this good place, that was this positive nurturing sort of relationship," he explains. "And when it fell apart, and when the trust was broken...he still followed the map back to that person, despite the fact that this was no good for him. So it's about sort of bad patterns of behavior."

"That's my interpretation," he laughs. "Now, I did not write those lyrics, so maybe Ryan Tedder and Adam Levine would have a different opinion of that!"

"Maps" is Maroon 5's sixth straight top-10 hit.  It's the lead single for their fifth album, V, due September 2.

Maroon 5 Inches Up Hot 100 with 'Maps'

Maroon 5 in 2012.
Maroon 5 is aiming at scoring their next No. 1 single with "Maps"

With all this hype about Maroon 5's next album, V dropping on September 2, and with the excitement of their new single "It Was Always You" coming out on July 29, "Maps" is definitely holding its own on the Billboard charts. This week, "Maps" finds itself moving up one more spot on the Billboard Hot 100 climbing up from 8-7 on the tally. If "Maps" were to score another single this year with "Maps", it would go in the books as Maroon 5's fourth chart-topper in the United States. The band's previous studio album, Overexposed's lead single "Payphone" peaked at a strong No. 2 on the Hot 100, but never topped the tally (thanks to Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe").

On the Billboard 200 albums chart, Maroon 5's 2012 album, Overexposed finds itself staying at No. 190 on the tally after last week's re-entry at the spot.

The band premiered the music video its Ryan Tedder-produced "Maps" single a few weeks ago, on July 2 through Vevo and YouTube and recently achieved over 10 million views in the last few days.

Maroon 5 Prep New Single 'It Was Always You'

The single was produced by Alexander Izquierdo, Stefan Johnson, Jordan Johnson, Marc Lo, and Clarence Coffee Jr. and was penned by Maroon 5 front man Adam Levine and Sam Martin. It will follow-up the band's hit single "Maps" (currently sitting at No. 8 on the Hot 100), which dropped as V's lead single on June 16.

Maroon 5's 'Sexy and Candy' B-Side: A Marcy Playground Cover?

Maroon 5's album V may feature Marcy Playground cover of "Sex and Candy"

Maroon 5 revealed all of the nitty-gritty details of their highly anticipated album, V on Monday (June 21) including the standard and deluxe edition track listings and the full unveiling of the album art cover. What some critics picked up on the track list was a track titled "Sex and Candy" on the b-sides list of the album. And many strongly believe it may be a possible cover of the 1997 hit "Sex and Candy" by alt-rock legends Marcy Playground rather than it being an original song by Maroon 5.

The guys in Maroon 5 are very well known to feature their own studio cover versions of their favorite songs on their past releases. For example, let's not forget the band's fourth album, Overexposed where a cover of "Let's Stay Together" by Al Green and a sexy dance-pop-turned-rock 'n roll cover of Prince's "Kiss" were seen on it's deluxe edition release. Also, in 2010, the band featured favorable covers of Alicia Keys' 2004 soul hit "If I Ain't Got You" and of Queen's 1979 glam-rock single "Crazy Little Thing Called Love." So, it could be possible that Maroon 5 are finding their inner alternative rock roots and put a cover of Marcy Playground's "Sex and Candy" into the mix of V.

Do you think the "Sex and Candy" track is a cover of Marcy Playground's 90's hit on V?

Maroon 5 Unveil Album Details: 'V' Is A Daft Punk & Hip Hop Influenced, Dance-Driven Album

Maroon 5 press photo for 2014.
Maroon 5 unveil more details about V and reveal new songs: "Animals" and "Leaving California"

Maroon 5 unveiled more exhilarating news about their highly anticipated fifth full length studio effort, V which is set to impact online and music retail stores on September 1 and 2 through Interscope Records. In the biography portion of Maroon 5's newly designed and fan-friendly updated website, an insider has revealed not only new producers and major influences, but also confirms the Gwen Stefani-Sia collaboration and new song titles.

According the the article, a reggae influence similar to that of "One More Night"'s shows up on the “whoa-oh-ohs” of “Animals”: a lustful anthem driven by a booming, Soul II Soul-style hip-hop beat accompanied by it's catchy chorus: “Baby, I’m preying on you tonight / Hunt you down, eat you alive / Just like animals” which evokes the otherworldly melodies of Mike Snow.

Also in the bio, it is said that V also finds Maroon 5 returning to the dance-floor with the standout track “Feelings,” whose disco-meets-Michael Jackson groove, 4/4 EDM thump, and Daft Punk-style vocoders suggests “Moves Like Jagger” on robot steroids.

Another disco-driven dance-floor pop hit from Maroon 5? I'll take it.

The article talks about the band's much anticipating Gwen Stefani collaboration "My Heart Is Open", stating... “My Heart Is Open” reveals Maroon 5 at its most emotionally raw and direct: it features Levine’s passionate romantic testifying “I don’t need another lover / I want you” over a spare, heart-tugging piano ballad, building to a soaring chorus with subtle orchestration.

The band also revealed a never-before unheard of song title by announcing that “Leaving California" hearkens back to the classic M5 sound – the bittersweet yet catchy confessionals of heartbreak from Songs About Jane that propelled the band to fame in the first place. As such, V brings Maroon 5 full circle, moving strength to strength from the band’s vital beginnings to its ongoing rise – taking the listener down nostalgic and new paths alike to create the latest undeniable chapter in the M5 odyssey.

James Valentine Talks About Gwen Stefani, New Album With Billboard

Maroon 5 in 2011.
The Maroon 5 guitarist talked with Billboard about the new album and it's features which include the No Doubt singer

Maroon 5's guitarist James Valentine talked with the people over at Billboard magazine earlier (Fri, July 18) about the band's highly anticipated fifth studio album, V. Valentine had spoken a few words about the band's collaboration with No Doubt's nothing-short-of-legendary lead singer Gwen Stefani and said "It's cool for all of us to have her on the record. And Adam won't shut up about how cool she is as a person. A lot of times when you meet your idols it's a letdown, but it's the opposite case with Gwen, apparently."

Also speaking up about working with producers Ryan Tedder ("Love Somebody", "Lucky Strike"), Benny Blanco ("Stereo Hearts", "Moves Like Jagger"), and even Sia Furler, who co-wrote the band's next feasible single "My Heart Is Open", he said "It was just sort of a workshop [..] Living here in Los Angeles we've known Sia for a long time, back from when she was just an artist, before her second act as, like, the most brilliant pop songwriter of all time, so it was really cool just to work with her," says Valentine. "Heart" actually features Stefani and was co-penned by Sia.

Maroon 5's newest album, V follows-up the band's 2012 studio album, Overexposed which raised the band's bar of defining pop music to an all-time-high with the pop-rap hit "Payphone", featuring rapper Wiz Khalifa, and the dance-pop influenced "Love Somebody." All of Valentine's work on the "overexposed" album has been described as it's most horrific or least favorited among fans, in which includes the tracks "Ladykiller" (a rebirth of the band's 2006 demo of "Pleasure Fucker"), "Fortune Teller" (a synth-heavy house tune), and "Tickets" (a disco-meets-pop earworm).

A few tracks have been confirmed from the band's upcoming album, which is set for a September 2 release date through Interscope Records; "Animals", the aggressive pop rock tune, and "My Heart is Open" featuring Gwen Stefani, the song that's suited best for arenas, being the most anticipated. And "Feelings" also being another.

Adam Levine Discusses Perks of Being 'Famous', Acting in Begin Again

Adam Levine spoke with USA Today to speak about being famous, restaurants, and why he's NOT sexy

From the article on @USAToday by Donna Freydkinhttp://usat.ly/1r0EJFj

Whatever you do, please do not call Adam Levine an actor.

He'll cringe and immediately correct you.

"I'm very humbled by it, and I'm not going to wax poetic about acting. Anthony Hopkins is an actor," he says. "I'm a singer in a band who got a call and decided to give it a shot. I got so lucky with this experience. I definitely want to do it again."

Levine, already a magnetic presence on NBC's The Voice, makes his official dramatic debut in the musical romance Begin Again, playing a musician who cheats on his girlfriend and writing partner (Keira Knightley). Levine, who never planned on pulling a Streisand or Beyonce, nevertheless couldn't turn down the opportunity because really, who would?

"I think every person in the world, no matter who they are, kind of secretly wants to be a movie star. I'd never trained to do it. It's the coolest thing," Levine says. "It's James Dean. Or Tom Hanks. They make an indelible impression on the culture and I really appreciate that. I never had a hankering to be a movie star — it was never a plan in my life — but it was an enticing opportunity."

For Levine, acting is directly related to his childhood in Los Angeles. "When I was a little kid, my father used to drag me to tryouts for certain sports. He told me that I didn't have to do it, but I should try it. I was a pretty shy, introverted kid, believe it or not, and I'd go kicking and screaming," he says. "All of the sudden, I fell madly in love with basketball and it changed my life. There's a voice inside me that says, 'Don't be afraid to try something.' I credit my father."
